The Best and Worst 2014 Super Bowl Ads

At more than $4 million (USD) a pop, you can always expect the Super Bowl advertisements to be something special. In fact, for some they generate more interest than the game itself.

In the US, it is the pinnacle moment for any advertising agency to create a Super Bowl ad, but that doesn’t mean they always get it right. Here we present the best and the worst advertisements for 2014 – enjoy!

9 Best 2014 Superbowl Ads

1. Bud Light “Epic Night”

Through the magic of hidden cameras and a lot of incredible planning, an unsuspecting man hanging out at a bar ends up on an adventure that involves a llama, ping pong with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and jamming on stage with OneRepublic.

2. Coca-Cola “It’s Beautiful”

Although this ad was met with a lot of unwarranted criticism and even blatant racism, those who saw it for what it truly is can appreciate the great message Coca-Cola are portraying about how multicultural America is.

3. Doritos “Time Machine”

Doritos has been developing quite a distinct voice through their advertising over the last few years, and they stuck to it with their cute and fun Time Machine ad for the 2014 Super Bowl.

4. TurboTax “Love Hurts”

TurboTax draws upon a reality that many American football fans know all too well in this humorous commercial; the majority of the time whichever team you usually root for won’t be in the Super Bowl.

5. Crackle “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”

This was the most spoken about commercial in the lead up to the 2014 Super Bowl, thanks to months of speculation that George (Jason Alexander) and Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) would reunite for the first time in over a decade since the last episode of Seinfeld. In the aftermath the hype continued, with this being the most re-watched Super Bowl ad of 2014.

6. Radioshack “The Phone Call”

Who doesn’t love a company that can poke some fun at themselves? In this commercial we see RadioShack is self-aware of the way they are viewed but are ready to shake things up.

7. Budweiser “Puppy Love”

Another one of the most talked about advertisements on the 2014 Super Bowl commercial roster, Budweiser has effectively drawn upon one of the biggest weak spots of the average consumer: cute puppies!

8. Hyundai Genesis “Dad’s Sixth Sense”

The Hyundai Genesis commercial “Dad’s Sixth Sense” may not be as fandangle as others, but it is a fun, memorable and quirky advertisement worth mentioning.

9. CarMax “Slow Clap”

5 Worst 2014 Superbowl Ads

1. Subway “Fritos Chicken Enchilada”

There’s nothing essentially “wrong” with this ad from Subway, but compared to its impressive airtime buddies it definitely isn’t anything special.

2. Chevrolet “Romance”

Who puts the sexy in animal breeding and pickup trucks? Probably not anyone, and definitely not Chevrolet, apparently. This advertisement is all kinds of bad.

3. Maserati “Strike”

This commercial from Maserati is the prime example that the way your ad looks isn’t always everything. In fact, that’s really where the problem lies. While a lot of effort was put into the production to make sure the look and feel was stunning, the fact that it was for a luxury Italian car brand left a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths. Not to mention that it was shot in a similar style to Beasts of the Southern Wild (including having the same main actress Quvenzhane Wallis feature), which really seems to cheapen the importance of the film’s message.

Honorable Mention

Who says the commercial has to actually feature during the Super Bowl to be one of the bests this year? This “Non Super Bowl” ad for Newcastle Brown Ale is funny in a self-deprecating way, and features Anna Kendrick – practically perfect!
