Job Description
Welcome to Traffic as our new Design Director to lead our growing Sydney based brand design team. You will partner with the Sydney & Melbourne teams to bring our client’s brand to life across every aspect of their business – from setting the art direction across their channels, to developing visual identities for our physical experiences, to evolving our brand guidelines and typography. You see the big picture, but also believe that great brands and great design comes down to execution and the details.

The role requires you to have deep experience conceptualising, designing and producing brand campaigns, as well as leading design teams. You are a communications designer by trade, an expert typographer and can lead by example and with humility. In addition, you’ll lead a team of talented designers, foster their professional development, and create the ideal conditions for them to do great work.

You will grow, lead and inspire a design team and manages their daily output. Promotes continual creative improvement and actively contributes to a culture of creative excellence. Possesses a hands-on approach to the work.

You will partner with CEO in setting the long term vision and voice for the Traffic brand’s visual storytelling from typography to illustration to photo direction. Continue to push Traffic as a leading and innovative consumer brand agency.

Collaborate with marketing leads and other business stakeholders on design projects and marketing campaigns. Guide the project briefing and scoping to ensure the a healthy balance of results and great creative work.

Lead and direct key projects and select initiatives and help build a network of creative partners of freelance designers, illustrators & photographers.

Continue to build on Traffic award winning performance globally grow our strong, dynamic portfolio that showcases a finely tuned and nuanced aesthetic. Strengths in typography, design systems, visual storytelling & art direction.

In your role you will manage a significant portfolio of business, leading client engagements and revenue responsibility. You will be responsible for executing and refining brand strategy to ensure profitability for existing business. You will bring together world class, multi-disciplinary teams that develop exceptional work to deliver both the client’s business objectives, and meet the needs of the digitally savvy, discerning consumer.

You will build intimate and trusted relationships to make sure our clients know we are here to make them successful. You understand the consumer, brand, the industry and the marketplace. You know the client organisation’s inner workings. Through a learning and optimising mindset, a culture of problem solving, and grit, you help clients understand how their business will be transformed by digital.

Key Responsibilities
You will lead complex pitches for tier one clients, bringing strategic thinking, industry knowledge and strong teamwork and collaboration skills. You will also help grow our existing client relationships, delivering greater impact for them.

You are comfortable working closely with business development to explore and drive plans and will ensure the account plan is a comprehensive, multi-layered strategy.

You will support project delivery in analysing key issues and risks to your programs of work, always assessing and anticipating business impact. You will help set quality and performance standards and assess and manage risk across multiple projects.

You have finely tuned client relationship skills; a proven track record of building strong personal and professional relationships up to the CMO, CIO and business lead level. Your relationships are based on your ability to provide a point of a view, an opinion, a new perspective to senior executives on the trends impacting their business; that makes you a trusted advisor. One of your strengths is your ability to knit together a broad range of capabilities in the service of helping our clients win in their markets. You have the ability to navigate conversations with multi touchpoint clients to anticipate and lead negotiations.

You are comfortable working with creatives, technologists, strategists; you have a genuine appreciation for creativity and an interest in technology and its impact on humankind. You display empathy, intellectual curiosity and openness to learn about new industries, new fields, new disciplines and are excited by change and learning.

You are entrepreneurial and like to operate across a number of clients. You are willing to take chances and have the resilience to respond positively to challenges. You want to be disruptive, to try something different and make it succeed.

Experience Guidelines
10 years minimum experience in consulting and client management across digital, transformation and technology. You are likely to have a background in consulting, digital, marketing technology, or a unique combination of these disciplines 3 years’ experience in managing and growing a portfolio. Not just an account manager, you have broad experience, a strong client network, are able to both generate and close business. Experience in bringing together teams with multiple discipline representation (especially technology, creative, media and strategy)

The Design Director role is responsible for leading, designing and delivering comprehensive and robust brand projects underpinned with strategic insights and strategies to our trusted clients whilst also focused with working to win new business.

The function of this role is to provide leadership and service in support of the wider Traffic Brand/Retail and Digital teams to implement this offering and lead brand, retail and digital transformation for our clients.

Working with the current designers, art director and writers you will be expected to lead and grow this team moving forward to develop leading communication strategies for Traffic and its clients. You are a positive passionate strategic thinker who lives and breathes business and design and understands the opportunity in digital as this is the future.

While the role is based in Sydney first and foremost, as a Design Director of the Sydney agency with a national presence, we’re looking for a leader in the business who can provide inspiration, introduce new strategic tools, processes and principles across all Australasian cities Traffic operates in.

This role will be the autonomous lead of all brand projects across clients in a range of categories, luxury good retail brand and property. In addition to enhancing the agency’s design profile.
