Design Director – Sydney

Job Description
As a Design Director at Traffic you will partner with the Melbourne & Sydney teams to bring our client’s brand to life across every aspect of their business – from setting the art direction across their channels to developing visual identities for our physical experiences to evolving our brand guidelines and typography. You see the big picture, but also believe that great brands and great design come down to execution and the details.

The role requires you to have deep experience conceptualising, designing and producing brand campaigns, as well as leading design teams. You are a communications designer by trade, an expert typographer and can lead by example and with humility. In addition, you’ll lead a team of talented designers, foster their professional development, and create the ideal conditions for them to do great work.

  • Grow, lead and inspire a design team and manages their daily output.
  • Promote continual creative improvement and actively contributes to a culture of creative excellence.
  • Possess a hands-on approach to the work.
  • Partner with our CEO in setting the long term vision and voice for Traffic.
  • Continue to push Traffic as a leading and innovative consumer brand agency.
  • Collaborate with marketing leads and other business stakeholders on design projects and marketing campaigns.
  • Guide the project briefing and scoping to ensure a healthy balance of results and great creative work.
  • Lead and direct key projects and select initiatives.
  • Help build a network of creative partners of freelance designers, illustrators & photographers.
  • Continue to build on Traffic award-winning performance globally grow our strong, dynamic portfolio that showcases a finely tuned and nuanced aesthetic. Strengths in typography, design systems, visual storytelling & art direction.

In your role, you will manage a significant portfolio of business, leading client engagements and revenue responsibility. You will be responsible for executing and refining the brand strategy to ensure profitability for an existing business. You will bring together world-class, multi-disciplinary teams that develop exceptional work to deliver both the client’s business objectives and meet the needs of the digitally savvy, discerning consumer.

You will build intimate and trusted relationships to make sure our clients know we are here to make them successful. You understand the consumer, brand, the industry and the marketplace. You know the client organisation’s inner workings. Through learning and optimising mindset, a culture of problem-solving, and grit, you help clients understand how their business will be transformed by digital.

Key Responsibilities
You will lead complex pitches for tier one clients, bringing strategic thinking, industry knowledge and strong teamwork and collaboration skills. You will also help grow our existing client relationships, delivering greater impact for them.

You are comfortable working closely with business development to explore and drive plans and will ensure the account plan is a comprehensive, multi-layered strategy.

The Design Director role is responsible for leading, designing and delivering comprehensive and robust brand projects underpinned with strategic insights and strategies to our trusted clients whilst also focused on working to win new business.

The function of this role is to provide leadership and service in support of the wider Traffic teams to implement this offering and lead brand, retail and digital transformation for our clients.

Working with the current designers, art director and writers you will be expected to lead and grow this team moving forward to develop leading communication strategies for Traffic and its clients. You are a positive passionate strategic thinker who lives and breathes business and design and understands the opportunity in digital as this is the future.

While the role is based in Sydney first and foremost, as a Design Director of the Sydney agency with a national presence, we’re looking for a leader in the business who can provide inspiration, introduce new strategic tools, processes and principles across all Australasian cities Traffic operate in.
