2013 Advertising Statistics in Australia

Now that the dust has been able to settle, it’s time to look back at the year that was 2013 and the advertising statistics of various mediums. We can learn a lot from the past, particularly when advertising and usage trends give such an invaluable insight into consumer behaviour.

Traffic has compiled social media and television advertising statistics for 2013 in Australia, to help you make the most of your 2014!

Social Media Advertising Statistics 2013

Social media is here to stay, and don’t business owners know it. In the past year alone, approximately 1 million websites integrated with Facebook using a social plugin. With a significant proportion of these websites belonging to businesses, it’s interesting to note how many have identified the importance of having this integration with their social media platform.

While we’re more aware of social media as a group, that still doesn’t mean we’re getting full marks for participation. Research shows that in 2013, a staggering 56% of customers tweeting businesses were ignored. In a world where customers have greater access to companies than ever before, and on a more public forum at that, it’s worth remembering that if you’re going to do social media, it’s most certainly in your best interest to do it right. Particularly when you consider that last year alone, 34% of marketers reported to have generated leads using Twitter.

Television Advertising Statistics 2013

Don’t believe the rumours; television is still one of the kingpins of the media game. Despite tablets, computers, laptops and even smartphones providing more choices than ever for consumption, traditional television still remains the most popular option.

Research shows that by the end of 2013, Australians were watching an average of 95 hours and 51 minutes of broadcast TV per month on their television sets, compared to 7 hours and 28 minutes a month of online video content using any other media form. While of course this doesn’t completely discount online advertising, it does show that television advertising should still be a major point of consideration for businesses and marketers.
